The three membership surveys which the SFIO carried out in 1951, 1954 and 1963 show how a party tries to establish ils social identity and to fashion the image it wants to offer. Using these primary sources, sociology can uncover these mechanisms of construction, identify and rectify distortions. Lest it ignores the role of politics, it must go beyond a mere census of militants. Analyzing the figures, it confirms the aging of the socialist militants, the growing attrition of the working class population and conversely, the progress of the middle salaried strata. Working on social representations, it sheds light on the latent conflict between manual workers and intellectuals, which undermines a party whose status is poorly legitimized. Widening its inquiry to structures and local ways of functioning, it highlights the diversity of organizational forms. If all the descriptions given of the SFIO are hardly satisfactory, that is probably because there are within it several parties, a typology of which can be attempted
