The paper presents the results of a research project aimed at understanding games and toys as cultural expressions of childhood. The study sought to contrast children's play activities with the specific conditions in which they occur, through observation and audiovisual recording work in fifteen different locations throughout Uruguay. The results indicate that games and toys serve as intermediaries between the local and global contexts in which childhood lives, and they represent important instances in which a new generation incorporates not only culture in general, but also specific and concrete forms of it. Moreover, games and toys also reflect the ways in which children face cultural forms that exceed them and with which they deal to adapt to the specific forms of the adult world
