Les As. reexaminent le phenomene des gestes iconiques et proposent une nouvelle analyse de leur fonction. En considerant le fait que les gestes iconiques ont des fonctions communicatives assez vagues et qu'ils sont redondants par rapport aux messages verbaux qui les accompagnent, ils proposent un modele axe sur les fonctions cognitives de ce type de geste, qui explique pourquoi les locuteurs produisent ces gestes et pourquoi ces gestes sont etroitement relies a la parole. Ce modele est base sur deux hypotheses fondamentales : 1) le traitement conceptuel active une imagerie visuelle ; 2) une image visuelle joue le role de mediateur entre le traitement conceptuel et la generation des gestes iconiques. Le modele implique ainsi l'idee que l'image visuelle facilite la recherche de mots
