Otólitos são concreções de aragonita localizadas no neurocrânio de peixes. Em alguns casos, esses elementos têm maior porte e podem ser usados por pesquisadores como peças diagnósticas para identificação e quantificação de indivíduos em sítios arqueológicos. Muitas populações os utilizaram como amuletos, oráculos, remédio e matéria-prima para jóias. Otólitos são comumente encontrados em sambaquis e são geralmente encarados como parte dos esqueletos dos peixes, sendo depositados em sítios como refugo de processamento e consumo. A pesquisa em um sítio cemitério revela novas hipóteses para a presença de otólitos em sambaquis
