A MERICAN geographical names have been regarded as of relatively little value as indicators of past geographical conditions. Although they are often misleading if interpreted literally, it is possible to reach general conclusions of some validity when their characteristics are analyzed. For the present paper, 827 place names in Trinity, Amador, and Calaveras Counties, California, were studied' to ascertain tendencies in geographical nomenclature among the early miners who settled there in search of gold, (it was impracticable to use about half the names because the places could not be located). The names were taken from the earliest American sources obtainable, comprising both maps and published accounts. In all, names were taken from 55 maps and 24 books and were classified by language of origin, type of natural or cultural feature, class of name, and extent to which in current use.2
