O NE of the great handicaps to the development of the science of phytogeography is the confusion that exists in the minds of both botanists and geographers with regard to terminology. A number of terms have evolved during the past two generations. These terms are given different meanings by different authors. An author may use two different terms for the same type of vegetation, or different types of vegetation may be designated by the same term by different authors or even by the same author
