has followed the shifting courses of the Mississippi River.2 In the Old World, in spite of the vast amount of archeological data and the maps and accounts of ancient geographers and topographers, few scholars have examined cultural remains in the light of coastal development.3 The primary objectives of the studies that have been carried out are to use settlement patterns and archeological data as keys to unravel the geomorphic and geologic history of the immediate past. The purpose of the present paper is to examine the association between the prehistoric and historic remains and the geomorphology of a relatively small coastal plain in the province of Elis in the northwestern part of the Peloponnesus, Greece.
