Climatic Pulsations during Historic Time in China

HE question of climatic change in historic times has called forth investigations in many regions. Recently the writer has made an examination of Chinese archives for material bearing on the problem. Exact meteorological observation goes back only a short time in any country; but, in the absence of rain-gauge and thermometer readings, we may resort to records of the frequency of floods and droughts, the number of severe winters, the dates when the rivers were frozen over, etc., for hints regarding the climate of the time. It was partly on such data that Bruckner based his well-known monograph on Klimaschwankungen. In dealing with the records in Chinese history there is one advantage which is probably not possessed by any of the European countries, i. e. the length of time for which they are available
