rT HE aim of this paper is to provide an anthropological commentary on a certain genre of geographical analysis that includes studies of mental maps, spatial images, cognitive environments, and similar notional constructs. These analyses have a common object in what Peter Gould has felicitously termed the topography. While such topographies differentiate, organize, or contour landscapes in socially or culturally significant ways, they are hidden in people's minds. The problem that they pose for analysis is one familiar to anthropologists: discovering and describing the characteristic way in which a people encounter a phenomenon.'
