THIS dictum by Professor Steel has been partly answered by Trewartha and Zelinsky in their survey of tropical Africa in 1954, and by other geographers2 in studies of specific African areas. The present paper is aimed at further reducing the gap in the knowledge of population distribution in Africa, through a consideration of Southern Rhodesia, where serious problems of overpopulation and overstocking in native areas have been revealed.3
