As a whole the book does not deal with ethnic or other cultural-centrifugal forces, although Ann Helgeson examines labor supply in her essay on population. Her comments on foreign labor are especially good. Brenton M. Barr describes contrasts in outlooks for forestry and fishing. section by North on transportation is very timely, given recent attention in the West to the sour state of transportation in the former Soviet Union. His predictions are valuable and underscore how much development of the region is held hostage to transportation and spatial constraints. comments by Bradshaw on foreign trade are very useful, but there is little speculation about the role of the Soviet Far in the Pacific Rim markets of the capitalist world, especially South Korea. The Soviet Far East is top-notch in showing the schizophrenic dilemma of the Soviet government as it tried to initiate new development in this most important and strategic region, yet found itself bound by the realities of geography. If the book is more a look at business-as-usual than a speculation about the future, it perhaps only mirrors uncertainties about what is ahead for the Far East.-KATHLEEN BRADEN
