The Long Beach, California, earthquake \nof March 10, 1933, will be less remembered \nby reason of its contributions to seismology \n-for as a crustal tremor there was nothing \nespecially remarkable about it-than it will \nbe for having broken down the "hush-hush" \npolicy that has hitherto been followed by \nthe commercial organizations of the cities of \nsouthern California. It has most fortunately \ncompelled public avowal by the most \nimportant of those organizations that earthquakes \nare a recurrent risk in their magnificent \nregion and that the risk must be met by \nsafer construction of buildings. But the loss \nof 120 lives and property destruction estimated \nat more than $50,000,000 are a high \nprice to pay for such wisdom
