Emigration and Depopulation

IN TERMS of the movement of people, there are three different kinds of places in the world: those that people stay in, those that they move to, and those that they leave. The first two types are familiar to almost everyone; we live in them. But what about the places that people leave? Although the Town That Has Gone Downhill, vividly described by Goldthwait a generation ago,' is the prototype of countless communities, the effects of emigration and depopulation in general are little known. This paper cites examples that may stimulate interest in a neglected and potentially fruitful field of inquiry
