T | HE following narrative relates to events that took place between approximately A.D. 1354 and A.D. 1380. It was originally told orally in a North European tongue, was later written down in Italian, and is here given in an English translation by the present writer. Bearing these facts in mind, the reader is invited to consider the story and to come to some conclusion about the land and the people described. To avoid prejudicing his judgment, two place names are omitted, and he is reminded that in the fourteenth century it was taken as a matter of course that any lands outside the tripartite continent-Europe-AsiaAfrica-must be islands
