The Island presents a most forbidding and repulsive aspect, one at which the mind recoils with horror; it appeared as though it had never been made for the use or benefit of either man or brute, but had sprung into existence through some of natures wild freaks, the vomiting of some subterranean fire. . . Possession is the name of it, and the rightful proprietor we presume is the Simoon of Africa, as its dry, arid surface too. plainly indicates. Seal, however, have been taken here in great numbers, to judge by the quantity of bones strewed upon its barren surface; and, although they showed instinct in selecting this void in creation as one of their numerous haunts, yet man . . . has followed and swept them from the island.1
