HE North American landscape seems to have been rediscovered during the last decade. Journals in various specializations offer articles describing methods to manage the newly discovered It might be a mistake to regard this outpouring as evidence of an increased general appreciation of the intangibles of nature. Instead it might reflect an increase in official interest as a result of legislation such as the U.S. National Environments Policy Act of 1969. In the past resource managers have apparently found landscape beauty too intangible to fit in standard analyses, but the new legislation virtually requires that the means be found to do so. The challenge then seems to be to find some way to describe the visual attributes of a site in a terminology similar to that used for other natural resources
