IN 1940 Otto Maull, professor at Graz University (but not a native Austrian), published a small volume on the United States.' It contains within brief compass an excellent presentation of the geomorphology, climate, and economy, but it exhibits certain characteristic statements. Although Maull praises American achievements, he levels the usual complaints against American materialism, the propaganda and business methods of the churches, the schools that try to mold the minds of students according to a uniform pattern, the lack of appreciation for scholarship, and the lack of creative power in art; he sees as the only hopeful sign the self-criticism of some Americans and as the main danger the mistaken idea that there can be an American nation. His advice is to convert the union of states into a European-type union of nations, because otherwise the suppressed national consciences will become disruptive
