A Historical Atlas of Tibet is a stunning achievement. Gorgeously designed, with forty-nine original maps and many more photographs of artwork, temples, and historical and contemporary landscapes, geographer Karl E. Ryavec's book is also meticulously researched and brimming with insight and information. True to its name, it is a historical atlas, the first to be produced about the vast region of Tibet. As such, it treats Tibet as a civilizational center, in contrast to its usual relegation to the margins of other variously defined regions of Asia. This article is protected by copyright.
