On possède deux ouvrages de Robert Grosseteste († 1253) sur l'épistémologie, le De veritate et le Commentaire sur les Analytiques postérieurs. Ils diffèrent par leur problématique comme par leur accent, mais ne s'opposent pas par la doctrine. Le premier explique la relation entre les vérités particulières et la Vérité suprême en termes d'illumination subjective et objective par la Lumière suprême. Le second reconnaît la validité de la connaissance scientifique dérivée de la sensation par abstraction des universaux. Mais si Grosseteste n'a aucun doute quant à la valeur de la méthodologie aristotélicienne, il n'a non plus aucune illusion quant à l'insuffisance de cette méthodologie comme guide menant à la vérité. Et lorsqu'il passe en revue toutes les sources de la connaissance humaine, la méthode scientifique se trouve modestement glissée entre le sens commun et la révélation divine dans une hiérarchie de la vérité qui tend à la vision de Dieu comme à son faîte et à sa perfection
