L'A. analyse les debats d'ordre historiographique, politique et moral que souleve le probleme de la representation historique de l'Holocauste. La representation du passe nazi de l'Allemagne depasse en effet le cadre theorique du jugement historique, du recit, des relations entre les faits et la verite, et de l'exigence rationnelle d'universalite. Au-dela de la conscience historique, la realite du passe prend une signification politique et morale dans la recherche individuelle et communautaire de legitimation. Il semble que le passe trouve sa propre legitimation dans l'autorite du present, constituee par l'auto-referentialite des textes historiques
