This essay is in three sections. The first section attempts to discern what kind of philosophy of history Hegel sets forth in the light of the generally accepted distinction between speculative and critical philosophy of history. According to the way this distinction in types of philosophy is normally stated, I attempt to show, it is very difficult to credit Hegel with having any philosophy of history. In the second section an effort is made to explicate Hegel's own view of the task of a philosophy of history. This requires a close discussion of the two other methods of writing history original and reflective which he contrasts and compares with the philosophical method of writing history. Finally, in a brief third section, I comment on interesting theoretical and practical consequences of a proper understanding of Hegel's task
