The articles devoted to philosophy of history in the Historische Zeitschrift, from its first appearance in 1859 until the change in philosophical orientation that coincided with the disruptive impact of World War I, are largely concerned with the principles and presuppositions of nineteenth-century German idealism.' Applied to history, this philosophical idealism gave rise to historicism. The principal mediators in this process of transmission were Wilhelm von Humboldt and Leopold von Ranke who, in applying the philosophical concepts of Herder, Schleiermacher, Schelling and Schlegel to the realm of historical phenomena, set out on a path of speculation and inquiry on which many of their successors were to follow them. Humboldt's Ideenlehre has been summarized as follows
