L'A. vise a montrer que la tâche de la philosophie de l'histoire consiste a elucider la pratique de l'histoire. Il preconise ainsi une methode de «realisme interne» qui puisse rendre compte des debats entre historiens et depasse les points de vue traditionnels (objectivisme et relativisme). Il soutient que la theorie des actes de parole et la notion d'horizon d'esperances peuvent etre liees au realisme interne pour mieux faire comprendre les aspects normatifs de l'historiographie
