Accepting an invitation to participate in a program occasioned by International Womens Year we turned to working-class women in search of the form in which the superstructural phenomena characteristic of relationships between men and women appear in this social class. We are not going to deny that we found these contradictions but these are of secondary significance next to the struggle for survival in a social system which oppresses and exploits its most underprivileged members. It is in this setting that the working women of Guatemala pass their lives and struggle to improve their living conditions. Our intention is not to present complicated theoretical statements concerning the drama of Guatemalan working-class women. What we do here is to set forth a case as it objectively occurred and to interpret it according to our world outlook. (excerpt)
