The possibility of building an egalitarian, participatory, non-alienating, rational, and humane society has long been the object of heated debate by numerous thinkers. The debate has touched issues and problems ranging from philosophy to economic management, for at the root of the problem are to be found two basic questions. First, what is the nature of humanity, and secondly, what methods are to be used to create a communist society by those who are convinced of its possibility? The Cuban revolution offers us a fruitful, interesting and at times engaging series of answers to these questions. The answers, however, have changed over time. In this paper I will present the different models the Cuban revolutionists have evolved in order to answer the question: what is to be done to construct a new society? I am essentially concerned with providing the general arguments and theoretical justifications behind these models. Although some general statements will be made as to the root causes for adopting any one of them, such will not be the central thrust of this paper. Our purpose is more modest: to merely document major shifts in policy and their effects on the political and economic organization of the society
