Brazil's election of Fernando Henrique Cardoso as president of the republic was a very positive step; he was an opponent of the military dictatorship that began in 1964 and also a social scientist, a student of Brazil's economic, social, and political conditions. During his campaign it was alleged that he had recanted his earlier writings, but he has denied this allegation and at the same time published two books of his theoretical writings of the past two decades: As ideias e o seu lugar: Ensaiao sobre as teorias do desenvolvimento (1993) and A construCdo da democracia: Estudos sobre politica (1993). The works brought together in these collections were originally published mainly in the 1960s, and rereading them confirms the conviction that his current political position is not inconsistent with them but clearly reflects an evolution of his sociological and political ideas. Because many of the recently published works are directed explicitly to a debate with my writings and with those of a group of social scientists of the Centro de Estudos Socio-econ6micos da Universidade do Chile (CESO) that I directed, I cannot fail to add my testimony to the already ample literature on his thought.
