These two factors—choice of literary genre and the acceptance or rejection of a philosophical theology—should not be regarded as completely separate points. As David Kraemer has argued, one’s religious worldview affects choice of genre, and genre in turn affects one’s religious worldview; they mutually reinforce each another.50 A philosophical theology can be expressed best via first-person ruminations; on the other hand, a mythic theology fits quite comfortably within a fragmentary and anthological framework. Both of these factors—genre and theology—help explain the distinctive hermeneutical postures of rabbinic Judaism and early Christianity
