Two decades ago, the reality, let alone the legitimacy, of ethnic minority groups in France was barely acknowledged. Now the discussion of ethnopolitics has become fashionable: in the face of the "unexpected rebellions" by Bretons and Corsicans, scholars have also rediscovered the Occitan, Basque and other communities which had either been considered submerged into the French nation, or whose small size had made them politically insignificant
