This article responds to the recent article published in this journal, April 2002, that discusses education for the environment. In doing so, it challenges environmental educators to analyse the field with a little more critique than is presently evident. I argue that an increased depth of thinking about the environment and the intentions of environmental education are required in order for the field to make progress in New Zealand. In closing, some suggestions for improved practice based on the Guidelines for Environmental Education published by the Ministry of Education are canvassed
