A New Perspective on the Minoan Villa

The Late Minoan I villa at Ayia Triada in Crete functioned as part of a larger administrative system. It is here suggested that the well known building there is in fact two separate villas; Linear A records and artifacts from the larger of the two indicate that it was the center of an estate. Produce and other items from this estate were collected at the villa and dispersed as rations and wages to local workers and as tax payments to the palace of Phaistos. Neopalatial Crete was organized into an extensive system of such manorial estates which contributed to the palatial centers
