Three Latin documents and seven representations ranging from the Augustan era to the beginning of the fourth century A. C. associate gods with the months of the Roman year. The connection of gods with months also occurs in Egypt where there are representations both from the New Kingdom and from the Macedonian/Ptolemaic era. The Roman system attested by the documents links the 12 Olympians with the months and may be derived from Hellenistic Greece. In a second system the deities were chosen rather on the basis of the Roman festivals celebrated during the months. The provenience, rarity, cost, and variety of the examples suggest that the subject had a particular appeal to the wealthy, who appreciated its message of divine order controlling seasonal change
