The finding of a small fragment of decorated Late Italian Sigillata, with the impression of the obverse of a bronze coin of Sabina datable to the period 128-137 A. C., provides a datum of unquestionable certainty in establishing a chronological and stylistic classification of this very common and widely diffused class of pottery, which so far has been considered mainly as an impoverished survival, during the second half of the first century A. C., of the great Arretine tradition. After a brief historical survey of the utilization of specific coins or monetary types for the decoration of ceramics in Graeco-Roman antiquity, the study brings into focus the stylistic components detectable in the bewildering manifestations of decorated Late Italian Sigillata, particularly classical typology and Gaulish structure, and outlines a viable classification of the entire class based on the new chronology. In this perspective the decorated Late Italian Sigillata can become not only an invaluable element for the dating of other archaeological discoveries, because of its extensive diffusion, but also a precious testimony to the existence of anticlassical trends continuously underlying the various phases of Roman official art, including the classical restoration of the Hadrianic period
