The ships of the naval procession of the miniature fresco from West House, Akrotiri, Thera, are examined in the context of their eastern Mediterranean background. Features of the Thera ships are traced to their Cycladic and Egyptian origins and are shown to reflect the functions of the craft and the maritime conditions under which they operated. Archaeological and textual evidence suggests that the Thera ships are bidirectional vessels suited to a variety of military and commercial uses
