That the Erechtheion contained an ever-burning golden lamp made by Kallimachos is known to us from a number of literary sources, its most detailed description being that of Pausanias. There is, however, no record of its exact position in the temple. A fresh appraisal of the combined evidence of literature and architecture may help us trace that position. At the same time we explore the function of the niche built high into an interior wall of the west section of the Erechtheion
