The archaeological record supports the theory that the period of Sextus Pompey's control of Sicily was prosperous. In addition, there is little evidence for any dissatisfaction with his government. After Octavian conquered the island in 36 B. C., he punished many of the Sicilian cities for their support of Pompey. The desolation resulting from the punishments is described by the surviving literary sources and may be supplemented by archaeological evidence. These punishments destroyed the urban life of Republican Sicily, and were completed by 32 B. C. The Augustan settlement of the island began in the years after Actium (31 B. C.), and redefined the economy of the island by making it a purely agricultural appendage of Italy
