The starting point of this essay is a small slit drum made of wood. It comes from what is now Papua New Guinea and was collected during the German colonial period. A scientist from Papua New Guinea and a scientist from Germany examine this object together. Both parties contribute with their knowledge to a more detailed research of the slit drum. The question now arises, who benefits from the results of this work? Based on this example, the author calls for an exchange with colleagues that is not only symbolic in nature. Provenance research projects on objects from the German colonial period and cooperation with colleagues should be sustainable, involve long-term and equal cooperation and be beneficial for both parties
