Although the feudal system of the Early Middle Ages has always been an important subject of economic history, its spatial dimension has long time been ignored. This study analyses the most detailed inventory of a seigneury of the Carolingian era from a spatial perspective. A close reading of the register of 893 leads to the key phrase mansus debet venire revealing the inner nexus of all sorts of services at the time: manorial services started at the farmyard and were organised within the seigneury. This new concept of doing service (Servitialität) supersedes the older form of inherited bondage (servitus) stemming from late antique slavery. This implies a fundamental shift in the way bonded peasants were dominated as well as in the way manorial services were generated. Within the context of the seigneury, the sedentariness of the peasants, their belongings and their capacity to move were equally used to generate surplus service
