The article tries to reconstruct the different uses of instruments such as whips for a history of German Colonialism and colonial echoes. Some members of parliament of the German Reichstag used to underline their mostly anti-colonial arguments by showing a whip pretending that exactly these kinds of instruments were used in some very cruel although isolated cases by colonial officers to punish the so called “natives”. However, this use of whips fostered not only anti-colonial arguments – it also strengthened the contemporary common sense that relied on a very positive view of colonialism itself. It even helped to forget the atrocities committed under German Colonialism. The colonies on the contrary produced a totally different perspective: There, the whip served as a symbol for colonial liberation movements
