This essay examines the laboratory of political experiments that was the Paris Commune. In the moment of the Commune, new horizons of the political imaginary emerged in the assemblies of clubs and associations. The declarations voiced in these assemblies were forms of interpellation that ushered in new ways of subject-formation. The politics of the Commune, then, relied not on republican universalism but on practical visions of a universal republic that transcended the “cellular regime of nationality” (Eugène Pottier)
