Funeral homes provide an essential service in modern societies, yet their role as commercial actors engaging with the deceased has also been contested. This article surveys the development of funeral markets in Germany since the late nineteenth century, asking about the changing interplay of market logics and socio-cultural norms. It reveals the early development of a vibrant commercial market for funerals already prior to World War I. Looking at strictures on advertising and competition, it then highlights the increasing moralization of the funeral market beginning in the interwar period. Analysing municipal efforts to socialize funeral services, finally, it discusses efforts to de-commodify burial services and control funeral costs into the postwar period
