This article discusses the cultures of happiness in German labour society during periods of high unemployment from the 1970s to the 1990s. Increasing unemployment had a huge impact not only on labour market policies but also on the unemployed way of life, including the question to what extent it was socially and politically accepted to be happy without employment. To shed light on this contentious issue, which was discussed by social scientists and feared by politicians, the article encourages to take into account subjective experiences of unemployed and employed people to find out what it means to be happy with or without work, and, not least, what knowledge of happiness resides where
