This article participates in the chronological “decompartmentalisation” between the first and the second French colonial empires. Focusing on the small French settlements of India, it shows that, from the 1810s to the late 1830s, continuity existed between the forms of governance of the colonial state and those of the Indian royalty and also with those of the Old Régime monarchy. From this perspective, the article examines inter-caste conflicts resolved by the French colonial government in order to understand the structure of its sovereignty and the way it was structured and exercised in relation to Indian society
