In recent talk, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick defined potential alternative canon of lesbian and gay male writing as a literature of oppression and resistance and survival and heroic making.l Oppression and resistance and survival and heroic making are the stuff of gay history, and much of what can be called gay drama is an expression of what might be called the historical impulse in gay literature-depicting and defining the collective past of gay men to affirm sense of identity and solidarity, and to educate the dominant culture about the brutality of its homophobia
