The most popular performance practices to emerge recently from the Czech Republic may come as something of a surprise to readers of academic theatre journals. While scholars may consider dissident theatrical texts of the communist era as the principal performance exports of the Czech nation, these texts and their productions have been overwhelmed by performances characterized by a marked complicity with, rather than resistance to, the current economic and political status quo. The past decade has witnessed a tremendous explosion in the production of all-male pornography in the Czech Republic; these pornographic performances, accessed either through recorded visual media or live via streaming video over the internet, have flooded the inter national marketplace. 1 In fact, a recent story in the popular press ranked the Czech nation just behind the United States in all-male pornographic production—a fact all the more remarkable considering that the Czech Republic has less than one-twentieth the population of the United States. Clearly, pornography attracts a large number of young Czech men into the business, especially given the relative size of the national job pool. 2 To gauge the scope of the Czech porn industry, one need only scan recent video titles; a scan of just one online source for all-male pornography unearthed the following titles, among others: Czech Files; Czech Your Oil; Czech Is in the Male; Double Czech; Reality Czech; Bounced Czechs; Personal Czechs; Aaron’s Adventures in the Czech Republic; Our Sexy Czech Hunks Love to Show Off; Czechers: A Bareback Game; Czech Inn; Czech In and Out; Czech Them Out; Czech Out the Young Studs; Czech Firemen; Czech Wonderboys; Czech Boys Exposed; Czech Twinks in Action; Czech Point; Raw Czech Point; Raw Czech
