The role of Dorset and the south-west in baronial reform has hitherto been overlooked. The grievances of Dorset against Henry III and his Poitevin favourites helped create the 1258 crisis. However, the earl of Gloucester exploited the crown's weakness in the county after 1258 to increase his local power. Henry III, on his reinstatement in 1261, vainly attempted to reverse this. Civil war brought further conflict with Gloucester, courtier struggles to control Dorset's castles, and anarchy; one-third of Dorset's knights rebelled. After 1267, Henry only slowly recovered control of the county
