The register of Archbishop John Stratford (1333-48) still existed in 1391, when it was consulted by Archbishop Courtenay, but subsequently disappeared. This document shows that its fate was to be the object, along with some of Courtenay's records, of a highway robbery in Rogate, Sussex, during the autumn of 1402 while it was being transported in the baggage-train of Archbishop Thomas Arundel. Though we can speculate on the reasons for this theft, the motives of the thieves, who struck in an area peculiarly favourable to the lawless, still elude us
