The theme of food plays an important role in the story of Joseph. This theme is framed by two meals which act as " book-ends" in Genesis 37.25 and 43.32-34. In the narrative, the first meal marks the exclusion of Joseph by his brothers and resembles a parody of a sacrificial meal. The second meal is held at Joseph's initiative and is the prelude to his reconciliation with his brothers, but is set in a triangular structure, since Egyptians are also present. If the story of Joseph reflects the preoccupations of the Judaean diaspora in Egypt, the two meals can be read as a reflection on the relation between this diaspora with the Judaeans of Palestine and with their Egyptian hosts
