The Lion and the Honey. The symbolic relationship between the Royal Eater (the lion) and the Royal food (honey), occur ing in the Sumerian sacred marriage, proceeds, as well as that between the sun and water, from an important natural, erotic and religious pattern. It exemplifies the covenant between gods and men, King and Earth, which is annually renewed in order to secure and to hallow the course of life and time. Egypt (the lioness Tefnut and the Royal bee, honey and the rising of the Nile) and the Bible (Samson's riddle) provide similar symbolism
