This introduction introduces the reader to the symposium With Culture in Mind. It recounts the origin of these six essays in a writing group. It shows that these essays, each of which centers on a clinical moment when the psychic and the social meet, work on two other levels as well: the critique of social and psychoanalytic theory and the assessment of social forces. The introduction frames these otherwise diversely voiced essays by naming and defining a group of concepts from cultural theory and psychoanalysis that circulate among them: discourse, interpellation, resignification, intelligibility, nationalism, and the Third. The introduction notes that the symposium concludes with a discussion that opens new questions about the approaches the essayists take to the nexus of mind, culture, and power
