The Lachish reliefs offer a unique snapshot of Judean children in the eighth century BCE. Using the adult Judeans as a point of comparison, this article explores the display of gender, age, and possible ethnicity shown though dress and adornment. The study utilizes images taken with Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) technology, which, with its ability to move and combine different light sources and the angles of these sources, creates high-resolution images and brings out features that can be hidden in the stone texture of the relief. An analysis of the adornment on children suggests that belts may have been used as a marker of social age for boys; girls are depicted with no equivalent marker. Infants may also wear a marker of social age, the sidelock, raising questions regarding the presence of Egyptians at Lachish and the diffusion of cultural practices
